Sidon waste-sorting plant reopens

Sidon’s waste-sorting plant reopened Monday, the port city’s mayor told local media, days after a raid by locals protesting the smell and environmental impact of the site led to its closure.

“The waste-sorting plant has been reopened with an emphasis on compliance with environmental standards,” Sidon Mayor Mohammad Saudi told reporters in Sidon.

Sidon’s household solid waste treatment center, operated by IBC, announced a temporary halt in operations Friday after demonstrators broke into the plant, angry at the smell and environmental impact of the site and its nearby dumps, sparking clashes between protesters and the plant’s workers.
